NEW STRUCTURES: City of Powell River is considering partnering with BC Transit to purchase two more bus shelters for Powell River Transit routes in Westview.

Westview Ratepayers Society is working with Townsite and Wildwood ratepayers to install more bus shelters within City of Powell River’s transit region.

At the Westview ratepayers on meeting on June 23, president Ron Woznow said he was pleased to advise that working with Bill Bird, with the Wildwood ratepayers, and city manager of transportation Cam Reed, there is now enough money to build three and a half new bus shelters, and accommodate the needs of people with disabilities, or anyone who has children in a stroller.

“We’re quite confident that these will be completed by the end of this year,” said Woznow. “We just have to decide whether or not we think we can get the additional funding for a fourth shelter.

“We also have the support from Townsite ratepayers for this initiative and what we are going to try to do is get a commitment from everybody to try and do three or four bus shelters every year. There’s a new federal program which can actually provide us the $350,000, so we’re going to be working with the stroke foundation and the Kiwanis club to see if they have projects related to accessibility, and we might put in one large grant application, which might allow us to do eight bus shelters next year.”

Woznow said in terms of choosing locations for the bus shelters, all of the drivers have been polled and they have come up with some suggestions, which will be finalized.
