Board supports application

Powell River Regional District directors are supporting the application from Savary Island General Store for a rural agency store. The board passed a motion at its August meeting to send a letter to the Liquor Distribution Branch, noting the application was improperly denied and should be reconsidered and approved.

Electoral Area A Director Patrick Brabazon pointed out there were rules about rural agency stores, including that an outlet can’t be within 10 kilometres of an adjacent one. There is a rural agency store at the Lund Hotel, Brabazon noted, and Savary is a little over four kilometres from Lund. “The second rule is that they will waive rule one if there is an all-weather road between A and B,” he said. “Well, as far as I know, no one has successfully walked on water for a couple of thousand years, so to deny it because it’s within 10 kilometres of Lund, in my view, was utterly improper and frankly bordering on bureaucratic stupidity.”

Powell River’s local government officials will be heading to Vancouver next week for the annual Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) conference.

Powell River Regional District has two resolutions on the agenda, one about ferry service and the other about the shortage of rural doctors.

The convention takes place from Monday, September 16 through to Friday, September 20.
