Terminal upgrade

City of Powell River council is expected to vote on a development permit for a new BC Ferries’ passenger waiting room and utility room at the May 16 meeting. The project is part of the upgrade to the Westview terminal, slated to begin in June.

The development permit application is required to advance the trestle upgrade project at the Westview terminal. The property is zoned W1, waterfront commercial, and is located within the Wharf at Westview development permit area, which has design guidelines. The proposed structures meet the objectives of the area, with materials including Hardieplank® in rustic cedar and wood siding to match the existing wharfinger building.

Council has previously approved an amendment to the licence of occupation agreement with British Columbia Ferry Services Inc. to increase the size of the leased area. The amendment increased the size of the leased area with a small lot line adjustment to allow for all new terminal upgrade improvements to be included in the licensed area. BC Ferries’ new construction is fully within the city’s foreshore tenure.

As well, council has approved BC Ferries’ request to use the area north of the Westview terminal trestle approach road as a construction laydown area, subject to the site being fully restored to its current condition. Council also authorized the director of infrastructure, Tor Birtig, as the city’s liaison during the construction period.
