Discrimination policy

Powell River Board of Education has decided not to create a new policy to address concerns by Brooks Secondary School’s Gay Straight Transgender Alliance Club.

Students from the club made a presentation to the board requesting that it take another look at School District 47’s discrimination policy and consider drafting a separate policy specifically dealing with sexual and gender-based discrimination, bullying and harassment.

The students were informed that Steve Formosa, former trustee, will be working on cleaning up the district’s policy manual this year and the board would be willing to look at the issue again at a later date.

What winter?

John Ede, weather observer at Powell River airport, reported February’s average temperature was about three degrees warmer than the 30-year historical climate average. Ede recorded a minimum mean temperature of 3.9° Celsius and a maximum mean temperature of 10.3°. February’s average temperature was 7.1°.

Eighty-two-point-seven hours of bright sunshine were recorded at the airport, about four hours more than the historical average.

Ede recorded 150.6 millimetres of rain fell during the month, 41.2 millimetres more than average and perhaps a trade-in for the warmer weather.

Setting it straight

Contrary to the headline in a story in last week’s Peak, City of Powell River is not increasing its vehicle inventory. The purchase of two new dump trucks is being made to replace two existing dump trucks.
