Scam alert
Powell River RCMP are advising the public of a scam known as the mystery or secret shopper.
A Powell River resident was recently hired by an online company to act as a mystery shopper after answering an enticing ad. He was asked to test the efficiency and customer service of Western Union, a company that facilitates money transfers.
The employee was given cheques worth several thousand dollars to test how well money is sent through the service. The employee deposited the cheques into his own bank account, kept a portion as pay and sent the remainder back to the employer. Unfortunately, the cheques were fraudulent and the employee was responsible to cover all the losses.
Climate action
An update on actions and progress toward the Powell River region meeting greenhouse gas emission reductions since signing onto the BC Climate Action Charter, was presented in a report to City of Powell River council on March 20.
Thomas Knight, planning manager for the city’s community energy and emissions plan, presented the 2013 interim Climate Action Revenue Incentive Program (CARIP) report created by Linda Greenan, manager of financial services for Powell River Regional District. As part of the initiative Powell River will enter a service agreement with the province this year.
The region will be required to implement software that will give a more accurate measurement of progress toward becoming carbon neutral.
The report is available on the regional district’s website.
