Terminal work begins
BC Ferries is advising its passengers headed to Texada Island and Comox that though they may notice work being started on the Westview berth, ferry service will not be affected this summer.
The ferry corporation issued a service notice that it will start construction on the terminal July 15.
The construction activities will include pile drilling and driving and will be performed throughout the project between the hours of 7 am to 8 pm. Alternate hours may be required and would be dependent on tidal activity.
BC Ferries’ public affairs manager Darin Guenette said that the ferry corporation is planning to keep the terminal operating normally until January 12, 2014.
“There’ll be at least six months of activity and it won’t affect operations,” he said.
The upgraded terminal is scheduled to reopen March 9, 2014.
BC Ferries is planning a second round of open houses for Powell River, Texada Island and Comox in early August to inform the public about alternate service that is being planned during the winter terminal closure at Westview.
Records fall
High temperatures shattered records throughout BC on Canada Day, July 1. Environment Canada listed 15 new heat records in communities from the south coast to the north and southeastern corners of the province.
In Powell River, temperatures reached 30.7º Celsius, breaking the record of 28.3º set in 1965.
Medical health officers urge caution as the spring’s cold, wet weather turned to hot summer conditions, as well as reminding residents that children and pets should never be left alone in a parked car.
