qathet Regional District directors will direct staff to proceed with a review and update of the Savary Island official community plan (OCP).
At the August 25 regional board meeting, directors considered the planning committee recommendation. Electoral Area B director Mark Gisborne said Savary Island had the oldest OCP, but he looks at the matter from the perspective of priority.
“I see that we have growing challenges and development pressures in Electoral Areas B and C,” said Gisborne. “The south of town OCPs are 10 years old.
“Our planning service has limited staff capacity, and when we say yes to one initiative, we are saying no to another. It is up to the board to set priorities for staff and based on the priorities of the community.”
Gisborne said the decision should be left to the next regional board to set the priority for which OCP should be updated. He said he believes Area B and C OCPs should be updated soon.
The board voted for the Savary OCP review and update, with Gisborne opposed.
