qathet Regional District’s (qRD) planning committee has no objection to the conversion of a mineral claim to a mining lease on Texada Island.

At the March 1 planning committee meeting, directors voted to recommend to the regional board that there is no objection to the application submitted by Imperial Limestone Co. to convert a mineral claim to a mining lease, and to renew a mining lease for a period of 30 years, with conditions.

One is that a completed riparian area assessment be conducted by a qualified environmental professional, and that all land within the streamside protection and enhancement areas be removed from the lease areas.

The other condition is that the applicant be required to obtain a site level assessment conducted by a qualified environmental professional to determine the nature, location and any necessary protection measures for sensitive ecosystems, and that any land containing a sensitive ecosystem be removed from the lease areas.
