qathet Regional District (qRD) board will consider approving the installation of a wind phone by Four Winds Hospice Society in Powell River Regional Cemetery for a trial period of five years.

At the July 24 qRD committee of the whole meeting, directors voted unanimously in favour of the motion to refer. Electoral Area D director and committee chair Sandy McCormick said installation of the wind phone was a great idea.

According to a staff report, the installation would be small, associated with a large, existing tree on the cemetery property, and would include a small, sheltered roof, an inoperative phone, and low-key signage to explain the concept. The wind phone originated in Japan in 2010, when an individual installed one in his garden to help him with his grief over his cousin’s death.

At a previous committee of the whole meeting, a delegation advocated for the installation of a Telephone of the Wind.
