qathet Regional District (qRD) has announced its success in securing provincial grant funding through the community emergency preparedness fund for the islands phase of the region’s sea level rise coastal flood mapping project.
A qRD media release stated that over the next year, a team of coastal scientists and engineers will perform shoreline assessments to better understand potential coastal impacts due to climate change on the islands in the region. The release stated that as part of the project, coastal inundation flood maps will be produced that show anticipated impacts resulting from sea level rise, storm surges and coastal erosion on the region’s island communities. The flood maps will identify anticipated boundaries of potential flood events and probabilities of occurrence.
The improved mapping will be of significant value for public safety, infrastructure planning, as well as the protection of environmental and economic assets throughout the region, the release stated.
