SNAKE YEAR: Pei Chen beside special treats only eaten during Lunar New Year. She operates Golden Gate Variety Store on Marine Avenue with her father Lee and mother Kim Chen. The family is busy preparing to ring in the Year of the Snake, which starts today, Wednesday January 29.

The Chen family, who operate Golden Gate Variety Store at 4706 Marine Avenue, have already started Lunar New Year festivities by sharing a feast of food last night with visiting family.

The Year of the Snake officially begins Wednesday, January 29, and Pei, daughter of Lee and Kim Chen will close shop early today, and all day Thursday, January 30, in order to relax, visit with family and share homemade traditional Chinese dishes together. Pei said her family is Chinese-Malaysian and emigrated from Malaysia to settle in the qathet region more than 30 years ago.

"Yesterday we celebrated Chinese New Year's Eve; we had pork, duck, fish and lots of vegetables," said Pei. "We have more people here this year so we are making a lot of food."

Pei said Year of the Snake in the zodiac is looked upon favourably, more so than Year of Dragon, which was in 2024.

"I'm looking forward to, hopefully, less stress this year," said Pei. "So far this year in Powell River, the weather has been good, and everything is going well."
