Lift Community Services (LIFT) released results of its recent warm clothing drive, which collected 35 totes of essential winter items for individuals facing homelessness and other barriers in the qathet region.
“We are overwhelmed by the generosity and support of the community,” stated LIFT executive director Kim Markel, in a media release. “The outpouring of support for folks who, for a variety of reasons, might struggle to stay warm and dry this winter is incredibly moving."
Over two days, tables were set up in the lobby of Powell River Public Library to collect donations.
Markel added that many people who came in with cold weather donations expressed concern for individuals enduring homelessness in the region.
“We ran out of storage totes partway through the first day,” stated Markel. “One youth coming out of the library literally took off the sweatshirt they were wearing and donated it."
As temperatures drop, these contributions will provide much-needed warmth and comfort for vulnerable individuals in the community, according to the release.
The collected items will be distributed in the coming weeks through several LIFT programs, including the emergency shelter, Community Resource Centre, iOAT Clinic and Family Place.
