Four candidates are campaigning to represent the Powell River-Sunshine Coast riding as MLA. General election day is October 19.
Greg Reid (Independent), Chris Moore (Conservative Party of BC), Christopher Hergesheimer (Green Party of BC) and Randene Neill (BC NDP) were asked the following question:
What do you believe is the most important issue in the riding and how would you work to address it if your party forms government?
Here is the response from Greg Reid (Independent):
The major issue for Powell River-Sunshine Coast voters is whether they will have any political power after the election.
Break the cycle of disappointment. Extend your democratic experience by voting on legislation. Play a part in the decisions of government for up to four years.
Government favours corporations. If you elect a party candidate history will repeat itself: broken election promises and programs/policies that underperform, or worse, blindside us.
The public will subsidize corporations. Watch provincial debt increase while natural resources disappear - sold off or licensed to corporate/foreign interests at a discount.
Meanwhile in the media, distractions will divert our attention and divide people into opposing camps. Business as usual.
There is a solution - avoid the party trap. Our Sunshine Coast riding can have continued involvement in government beginning October 19. Vote for direct democracy. On the morning after the election, relax, look at the provincial results and know that we have political power.
Time after time you can vote on each piece of legislation according to its merit using our newly created voting app. With this tool, our constituency will have the opportunity to have our say on all legislation while other ridings sit on the sidelines, powerless.
