DIGITAL OPTION: People riding transit in the qathet region now have a digital payment option called UMO (you-mo). The BC Transit service went live today, January 10, with the digital option available for the Powell River Regional Transit System.

BC Transit went live with a digital payment option today, January 10, for transit users in the qathet region.

UMO (pronounced you-mo) is an electronic fare system and contactless payment system. Meaning that, bus riders can now use an app or card instead of cash for payment.

According to a BC Transit media release: "New payment methods include the UMO mobility app and a reloadable UMO card."

The app is free and can be downloaded in the Apple app and Google Play.

"When ready to travel, riders open their app to display a QR code, as riders board the bus, they present their app’s QR code to an onboard digital validator," the media release stated.

Powell River Regional Transit System users can also find real-time bus information and maps using the UMO app.

"If riders don't feel comfortable using the app on their phone, they can alternatively use a reloadable card."

The card is free and can be picked up from a BC Transit UMO vendor.

BC Transit indicated that the 30-day pass will eventually replace the existing monthly pass. Those going to and from Texada Island are recommended to pre-purchase a day pass for their trip.

BC Transit stated that cash will continue to be accepted for those who prefer to use it. At a future date, BC Transit plans to provincially enable onboard payments with debit and credit.
