MINISTER’S APPROVAL: Powell River Regional Hospital District received correspondence updating the hospital board on a request by the board to change its name to qathet Regional Hospital District.

A name change for Powell River Regional Hospital District (PRRHD) to qathet Regional Hospital District is still in the works.

At the December 8 hospital district committee of the whole meeting, city director and hospital board chair George Doubt said the district had received correspondence from the provincial health ministry, which is considering the name change.

Correspondence from assistant deputy minister Kelly Uyeno thanked the board for a letter dated October 14, requesting supplemental letters patent to change the name to qathet Regional Hospital District.

“I am responding on behalf of the honourable Adrian Dix, minister of health," stated Uyeno. “The ministry of health staff is reviewing the comprehensive documentation enclosed in your letter to proceed to the next step and seek the minister’s approval of an order to amend the PRRHD’s letters patent.

“I acknowledge the significance of this change to a name that is meaningful and reflective of the reconciliation occurring in the community. Thank you for your efforts in pursuing this change.”

Powell River General Hospital was officially renamed as qathet General Hospital at a ceremony in July.
