City of Powell River mayor Ron Woznow has issued a statement of support for inclusive communities.
“I wish to start this statement on behalf of myself and city council by first thanking all of our community members that uphold the values and principles of our city as a welcoming, caring and inclusive community,” stated Woznow in his written statement. “Your individual and collective actions support our city’s growing reputation as a vibrant, resilient and attractive community that supports and welcomes a wide diversity of individuals of all ages, life stages, abilities, cultural backgrounds, beliefs, sexual orientations and identities.”
Woznow stated that as requested, the city displayed the pride flag at city hall during Pride Month in June.
“This served as a symbol that we are an inclusive community,” stated Woznow. “During the evening of June 26, the pride flag flown at city hall was cut from the flagpole. More recently, in September, our community, along with many others across Canada, was the target of demonstrations and acts of intolerance towards members of the 2SLGBTQ+ community. These actions go against the core values and principles that our city upholds.”
Woznow stated that mayor and council embraces the diversity of all who make up this community.
“Hate crimes and discriminatory actions have a profound impact on the individuals targeted as well as the wider community,” added Woznow. “They deliberately attempt to create an atmosphere of fear, isolation, and injustice. This undermines the fabric of the healthy and inclusive community we aspire to be.
“We need to ensure that the negative and discriminatory actions of a small number of individuals are quickly challenged and not tolerated. By standing together, we can strengthen, protect, and build our community as one that values acceptance, respect and equality for all.”
