City of Powell River mayor Ron Woznow read two proclamations at the April 17 council meeting.
The mayor proclaimed the National Day of Mourning on April 28. He said every April 28, the recognition commemorates workers who have been injured, killed or suffer illness as the result of occupational accidents and hazards, and that safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Woznow said it takes commitment and dedication to make sure everyone goes home to their family safe and healthy at the end of the day. He added that the annual day of mourning is an opportunity to remember those fallen workers and to recommit to creating safer workplaces.
Councillor Cindy Elliott said in past years when this proclamation has been made, council has also had a city representative talk about the fact that there is usually an event on that day at the cemetery in Cranberry. She said at the annual event, people recognize the value of that day, so she was wondering if that was still happening.
City CAO Lisa Bhopalsingh said details are still being confirmed, but Elliott was correct that there would be an event, and that details would be sent to council when staff had them.
Woznow also read a proclamation for Human Values Day. He said increasing the awareness of the basic human value of truth, right conduct, peace, love and nonviolence, and other human values such as honesty, integrity, kindness and caring are inherent in all creeds, countries, cultures and communities, which makes these values truly values without borders. He said taking daily steps toward positive change in Powell River will strive to reduce violence of all types, spreading peace and progress in the city.
Woznow mentioned that Walk for Values is an international movement that started in Canada in 2003, not as a fundraiser, but a way to make communities richer and healthier by pledging their commitment to practice these human values, and to be motivated to serve the community through volunteer work, by donating blood or donating food to the needy. He said Walk for Values is designed to raise awareness of human values and to promote individual responsibility toward the collective future of humanity.
“Therefore, I proclaim April 24, 2025, as Human Values Day in the City of Powell River,” said Woznow.
