EXTINGUISH BLAZE: Firefighters responded to a call on Joyce Avenue when a dryer in a residence started burning. One man was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

A dryer fire at 4315 Joyce Avenue on October 26 resulted in one person being taken to Powell River General Hospital.

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to the scene before 9 am to extinguish the blaze.

“Crews arrived on scene and quickly had to get access into the house,” said fire chief Terry Peters. “There were people in the house and we had an individual who had smoke inhalation.

“Firefighters went in and we extricated him out of the house. We maintained first aid and the ambulance took him off to the hospital.”

Peters said the house was barricaded when firefighters arrived, but entry was gained at the rear of the house in the basement where the dryer was situated, the fire was extinguished and the house was ventilated.

“We have structural damage and electrical damage as well,” said Peters. “RCMP have been on scene and BC Hydro is on scene and hydro is going to disconnect the power. We’ll end up boarding up the house and handing it back to the owner.”
