LEARNING EXPERIENCE: Powell River Fire Rescue coordinated a hazard materials course for city and regional firefighters as part of the training that is conducted in qathet region.

Firefighters from around the region received a short course in hazmat operations to broaden their skills.

According to Powell River Fire Rescue (PRFR) deputy chief Rocky Swanson, his fire department geared up to host a hazmat operations course starting on April 5 and running through until April 7.

“This invaluable training opportunity, facilitated by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), comes at no cost to participants,” stated Swanson in a media release. “With 11 students from PRFR and 13 from neighbouring volunteer departments, the course promises to be a collaborative learning experience.

“A big thank-you goes out to the IAFF and their instructors for their generosity in making this course accessible. Normally an expensive endeavour, their support has minimized our financial commitment, allowing us to prioritize this essential training. Graduates of the course will emerge equipped with a crucial component of their basic firefighter qualification, meeting the rigorous standards set by the BC Fire Commissioners office.”

Swanson stated that over the weekend, participants delved into various topics including: hazard recognition, risk assessment, personal protective equipment usage, decontamination procedures, spill control and containment, emergency response tactics, communication protocols, legal and regulatory requirements, and coordination with other agencies.

“The officers of Powell River Fire Rescue extend our thanks to the management of the recreation complex for providing a conducive classroom environment, to the other managers and directors in the city, and most importantly, to all the dedicated firefighter students,” stated Swanson. “Your commitment to enhancing your skills contributes directly to the safety of our communities. Thank you for investing your time in this essential learning opportunity.”
