City of Powell River councillors have been sent dozens more pieces of correspondence regarding a possible name change for the city, and one councillor said efforts are made by elected officials to read them all.
At the August 16 committee of the whole meeting, as part of the agenda package, there were pages upon pages of correspondence expressing thoughts and opinions about a possible renaming. The correspondence to the city bridged a timeline of June 9 to August 11, according to committee chair CaroleAnn Leishman.
Councillor George Doubt said he wanted to point out that councillors were presented with about 110 pages of correspondence in this agenda package.
“We go through it fairly quickly at a committee of the whole meeting, but I want people to know that I, for one, read all of the letters and I think about what they say,” said Doubt. “I take them to heart.
“I thank all of the people who took the time to send them in. I read them. I care about them. The fact that we don’t devote a really long period of time in a meeting talking about them doesn’t minimize the importance of the letters that people keep sending in. I read them and I’m sure my colleagues do. They are important to the process.”
Councillor Cindy Elliott said she also reads the letters.
“Each and every letter is a voice from the community that I listen to,” said Elliott. “I wanted to also point out that these are not the only letters that I’ve read.
“This batch, I think, is batch number four that has come forward on this topic. We’ve been reading a lot of letters. They do get through to us, and we do read them, and we are listening.”
The committee gave unanimous consent to receive the package of correspondence.
