City council has given first three readings to amending the south/Westview harbour rates and regulations amendment bylaw to reflect electricity rates in the facility.

Denniston’s report to council stated that it has been discovered that the hourly 100-ampere electricity rates are required to accurately bill the Canadian Coast Guard for electricity usage.

The bylaw proposes to set a rate of $0.14 per kilowatt hour in 2023, payable upon invoicing. The amendment bylaw also stipulates the electricity rate increasing by two per cent per year up to 2027, which is the estimated increase in electricity costs to the city.

The city aims to break even on electricity sales, since legislation prohibits electricity resale at a profit for this type of operation, the report stated.
