Powell River RCMP reported the following for June 28 to July 4, 2023.

Total calls for service: 135

Thefts: 7

Assaults: 6

Impaired driving: 4

Mischief: 9

Break and enter: 3

Mental health: 8

June 28; 7100 block Alberni Street

At approximately 4:23 pm, Powell River RCMP received a report of a theft from Save-On-Foods. A store employee observed a customer load a bag with groceries and then exit the store without paying for them. The employee was familiar with the customer and his identity was established. The groceries were recovered and the 34-year-old male was arrested for theft under $5,000 and released to appear in Powell River Provincial Court on September 12.

June 29; 7100 block Alberni Street

At approximately 12:30 pm, Powell River RCMP received a report from the Town Centre Mall that a male was captured on video surveillance in the early hours of the morning attempting to gain entry into a locked electrical room. The male was not able to gain access, however, the exterior door was damaged during the attempt. Police were able to identify the male in the video and the 37-year-old was arrested for mischief and released to appear in Powell River Provincial Court on September 12. 

July 1; Gillies Bay Road, Texada Island

At approximately 3:54 pm, Texada RCMP responded to a residential structure fire. The Texada Island fire departments fought the fire for several hours. Tragically, one person perished in the fire. An investigation was initiated and a fire investigator from the office of the fire commissioner attended the scene.  His examination determined that the fire was accidental and no foul play is suspected. The investigation is ongoing with the assistance of the BC Coroners Service.
