April 7

Powell River RCMP received a call from a person who was the victim of crypto fraud. The victim advised that they opened an account with XB Trade and began purchasing crypto currency.

When they went to withdraw some money the company requested access to their computer, which was authorized. The company ended up sending a withdrawal request instead of a deposit so the company accessed the victim’s online banking, stealing thousands of dollars.

The investigation revealed that XB Trade is a scam investment platform that manipulates its trades and encourages people to keep investing. Most investors never get their money back.

Police are encouraging everyone to do their due diligence when it comes to investing and choose an accredited firm or online platform. A quick internet search can often identify fraudulent investment firms.

April 10

Police received a report of a possible scam. The victim advised that they provided remote access to their computer to someone claiming to be a computer expert. The victim received the request online and felt it was legitimate.

When the victim realized what they had done, they unplugged their computer and contacted the authorities as well as the bank. So far there has been no loss but identity theft can appear at any time.

Police are warning people that unsolicited messages about their computers are a scam. Anyone who thinks something is wrong with any of their devices is advised to take them to a trusted business.
