Powell River RCMP reported the following for February 16 to 22, 2022.

Total calls for service: 97
Thefts: 5
Impaired driving: 4
Break and enter: 3
Assaults: 1

February 16; Harwood Avenue, 4600 block
Powell River RCMP responded to a break and enter. The homeowner discovered a detached garage was broken into overnight and reported that his Stihl 024 chainsaw was missing. The chainsaw is described as having a 17-inch bar, and orange and grey in colour.  

February 16; Lombardy Avenue
At 11:19 pm, an RCMP officer was on patrol on Lombardy Avenue and noted damage to a grey Buick travelling southbound. The officer conducted a vehicle stop and noted a strong odour of liquor coming from the vehicle. The male driver admitted to consuming two ciders. The officer made a roadside breath demand and conducted two breath tests; both resulted in a “fail.” The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition under the Motor Vehicle Act. The vehicle was towed and impounded for the mandatory 30 days.

February 18; Highway 101, north
At 9:51 am, RCMP responded to a report of a single-vehicle motor vehicle rollover on Highway 101 near Atrevida Road.  Police arrived on scene and spoke with the driver, who had an odour of liquor and glossy eyes. A roadside breath demand was made by police. The driver failed and was escorted to the police detachment and provided two breath samples. The driver has been issued an administrative driving prohibition under the Motor Vehicle Act and an appearance notice to appear in court on June 28 for Operation while Impaired. Two passengers in the vehicle were taken to Powell River General Hospital and treated for injuries as a result of the rollover.  

February 18; Marine Avenue
At 7:19 pm, RCMP received a report from a witness of a possible impaired driver swerving on Highway 101 and almost colliding with an oncoming vehicle. Police located a vehicle matching the description provided, a black Ford Escape on Marine Avenue at Courtenay Street. Police detected an odour of liquor from the driver and made a roadside breath demand. The driver complied and provided two samples; both results were a “fail.” The driver was issued a 90-day immediate roadside driving prohibition. The vehicle was towed from the scene and impounded for a mandatory 30 days under the Motor Vehicle Act.  

February 20; Alberni Street, 7100 block
At 2:44 pm, RCMP received a report of a theft at the BC Liquor Store in Town Centre mall. A male suspect stole a Jamieson box that contained five 1.5-litre bottles of Bacardi, valued at $300. The male suspect is described as Caucasian, in his 20s, with “spikey, dirty blonde hair,” and wearing a hoodie. Police are still investigating.

February 21; Marine Avenue, 4100 block
RCMP were conducting speed enforcement and stopped a vehicle for speeding. The driver admitted to drinking two beers prior to driving and provided two roadside screening device breath samples. Both results were “warn” and the driver was issued a three-day immediate roadside driving prohibition. The vehicle was not towed as there was a sober driver available.
