UNHOUSED INCREASE: North Island – Powell River MP Rachel Blaney criticized the Liberals and Conservatives in question period in the House of Commons for affordable housing issues in her riding.

On October 17, North Island – Powell River MP Rachel Blaney pushed the Liberals and Conservatives on their lack of support for affordable housing in her riding and across Canada. According to a media release from Blaney, during question period, she raised the drastically increased population of unhoused people in her riding, asking the Liberals for more support for affordable homes.

“This is a catastrophe,” Blaney stated in the House of Commons. “The Liberals are leaving housing up to luxury condo developers who only care about profits. The Conservatives on council in Campbell River are taking away tax exemptions for non-profits who support those in need of a home.”

Blaney noted that Comox Valley has seen a 106 per cent increase in the unhoused population in the past year, the largest increase on record in the area. In Campbell River, the unhoused population increased by 70 per cent during the same period.

“People need support and affordable homes now,” stated Blaney. “When are the Liberals going to step up and build the homes Canadians desperately need?”
