Canadian families are getting some help with the high cost of living.
According to a media release from North Island-Powell River MP Rachel Blaney, since last spring, New Democrats have called on the government to double the GST rebate and, today, Canadians families will receive an extra $467 to help them pay for their groceries. The release stated that as the price of food hits a 41-year high, New Democrats are saying this support could not be more urgently needed.
“My NDP colleagues and I are fighting to get more money into your pocket, and it’s working,” stated Blaney. “If the Liberals hadn’t been pushed to act, people would not be getting this needed support, families would have had hundreds of dollars more this summer, and the Conservatives aren’t even interested in helping you afford the dentist.”
The release stated that last spring, New Democrats called on the Liberals to stop giving rich oil and gas companies billions of dollars in subsidies, and instead use this money to help hardworking Canadians by doubling the GST tax credit.
“Families in British Columbia and across Canada are facing an impossible situation,” stated Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns. “The price of food is rising almost more than twice as quickly as the wages Canadians earn. People are doing everything right but just haven’t been able to keep up – all while the CEOs of huge grocery store chains have made massive profits and millions of dollars in bonuses.
“My priority is getting hardworking people the help they need with money back in their pockets.”
