A marine situation involving a tug and barge off Powell River’s shoreline ended uneventfully today.
According to Canadian Coast Guard communications advisor Michelle Imbeau, the coast guard’s marine communications and traffic services (MCTS) were aware of the situation and in touch via VHF radio as required. The situation arose last night.
“The tug and barge had a towing bridle that they needed repair so they anchored the barge in the vicinity nearby Powell River to complete that repair,” said Imbeau. “The empty barge was not compromised and was not taking on water. There was no risk of pollution.”
According the the coast guard, these events are not uncommon in Powell River waters.
The tug and barge have since proceeded on their way.
