Russell Brewer is revelling in his responsibilities with Tla’amin Nation.
In his new position as chief operating officer, Brewer has a large and active portfolio, including public works, lands and resources, the fire department, education, health and community services.
“So, in simple terms, it involves a community-facing service delivery aspect to Tla’amin’s work; there’s been a lot of growth” said Brewer. “Since the treaty, there’s definitely a lot of work, nation-building work, going on. It’s a really exciting time to come in and help in that growth.”
Brewer has extensive civic service, having worked as City of Powell River’s chief administrative officer, having been a city councillor and qathet School District trustee, and through his latest former position as the chief public affairs officer for Métis Nation BC.
Brewer is also currently co-chair of qathet Division of Family Practice. He spent many years prior to his public service as a forester, so he has extensive service in lands and resources, health care and education.
“What sets Tla’amin Nation aside from local governments is that it is also looking after health, education and housing; those are big portfolios and have lots of responsibility,” said Brewer. “As with many communities, housing is a big priority, and really, I’m new in my tenure here, so I am getting familiar at this stage. With the opening of the elders complex earlier this year and the new development on the highway, there is lots being done but still, the need is great.
“There’s quite a team of construction workers now. They are doing renovations and builds, which is great. It provides for improved housing and employment opportunities. It’s great to have that expertise internally.”
Brewer said Tla’amin Nation is a tight community and residents are very optimistic. He said there is a lot of hope in delivering services and the enthusiasm and positive energy is great.
“I love being able to work in a community like this with the folks who are so dedicated and committed to improving things,” said Brewer. “Everyone is motivated to deliver the services that the community needs.”
Relishing role
In his new position, Brewer said he is becoming more familiar with the different programs and services being delivered, and what the different needs and priorities are.
“I view my role as being able to support the people who have worked here as best I can,” said Brewer. “I want to support the leadership as best I can to help deliver on Tla’amin’s plan. There is an ambitious plan. The opportunities are so diverse and great.”
Brewer said he is also looking forward to liaison with City of Powell River and qathet Regional District.
“I believe that the region as a whole is just going to be stronger, and better off with everyone working together,” said Brewer. “What will serve Tla’amin well will serve the region as a whole well. It’s a matter of building and supporting relationships. I look forward to connecting with staff and leadership on various projects and initiatives in the region.
“There is much that the three governments share in common, and their priorities and objectives for their constituents. There’s the community accord that allows for conversations to happen in a way that supports building relationships. Everyone has the same objectives to support the most vulnerable in the region and deliver projects that benefit everybody. There’s so much great work happening that will be good for the region as a whole.”
Brewer said if people focus on the hope and the optimism that is emerging, it will make the region a better place. He hopes that people embrace the energy that comes from lifting up everyone in the region.
“There’s so much great opportunity that will benefit everyone over the long term,” said Brewer. “It’s very exciting.”
