City of Powell River Council has announced the appointment of new chief administrative officer. Lisa Bhopalsingh, originally from Trinidad, will assume the role, according to a city media release.

Bhopalsingh obtained her undergraduate and master’s degrees from Oxford University and went on to complete a Master’s of Community and Regional Planning from University of British Columbia. She was previously the director of community development for City of Nanaimo. While there, she led Nanaimo's long range planning, and worked on reconciliation, sustainability, affordable housing and neighbourhood and heritage planning.

Bhopalsingh's previous work experience involved leading and fostering regional growth management, community land use planning, disaster resilience, intergovernmental relations, economic development and water sustainability for the Regional District of Nanaimo, Government of British Columbia, several First Nations governments on Vancouver Island, and the District of Lillooet.

“We look forward to her leading our staff and helping capture opportunities to increase housing and attract proven industry to the mill site," stated Mayor Ron Woznow. "Her expertise in planning is a great asset to help make this happen."
