Kicking the Clutter: Get your children ready for back to school

Transition time can be simplified for families

It’s that time of the year when families are busy preparing their children for a new school year.

The transition from relaxed summer days to an organized school routine can be difficult. But with the right planning, you can simplify the process.

Here are a few tips that might help your children to have a smooth start.

Prepare your kids

Some kids might have difficulty with the transition. Talk with them about exciting things waiting at school. When parents show their excitement, children are more likely to do the same. Share some of your great times in school.

Shop for supplies

Going shopping with your kids for new clothes and supplies can be fun and an opportunity to find out about any concerns they might have. Make sure to involve your kids when selecting their clothes or supplies.

Create new schedule

Start your family's back-to-school routine by steadily adjusting bedtime and wake-up times. It will take up to three mornings for them to adapt to the new schedule. Consistent routines help children feel more secure and confident.

Establish sleep patterns

Sufficient sleep is vital for your children’s health and functioning in school. Set a steady bedtime and create a calming before-sleep routine. Set up some rules regarding using cell phones after a certain time. Introduce reading to the whole family.

Implement morning prep

Even with the best preparation, mornings can be chaotic for any family. Prepare breakfast items in advance, such as cereal, pancake mix or smoothies. Designate a spot near the door for backpacks, shoes and jackets so you’re not running a marathon to find them in the morning.

Assemble outfits

Create a defined area for school outfits, supplies and instruments to make mornings effortless. Encourage your children to choose their clothes the night before. To save time, consider organizing outfits for the entire week. This simple practice reduces decision-making stress and prevents last-minute struggles for clean clothes.

Use one calendar

Sharing one central family calendar can be a significant improvement in the way a family functions. Use physical whiteboards or any other high tech to track school events, extracurricular activities and important dates. A calendar will prevent missed appointments and keep everyone on the same page.

Designate homework station

Set up a reserved homework station with all the necessary supplies. Having a defined space for studying encourages focus and productivity. Include basics like pens, pencils, paper, rulers and a quiet workspace free from distractions.

Implement homework schedule

Help your children establish a homework routine. Be consistent as kids are very creative with their excuses and promises. Motivate your children to complete their homework by setting up a reward system. It can be extra playtime, a special treat or a sleepover with a friend.

Get involved in your kid’s education as teachers can do only so much. I hope these simple tips will help prepare your child for a successful school year.
