Texada Island Non-profit Seniors Housing Society (TINSHS) has been busy raising funds and holding community engagement sessions in order to get shovels in the ground and start building much-needed seniors housing on the region's biggest Gulf Island.
TINSHS president Cathy Brown said the biggest obstacle to building seniors housing on Texada is obtaining title to buildable land. After much searching, TINSHS identified an eight-acre parcel privately owned by Selkirk Mountain Forest within Gillies Bay Improvement District that is suitable for development. So far $175,173 has been raised of the $250,000 required. Beginning April 3, Brown said TINSHS is holding a two-part auction fundraiser.
"The online auction will feature 20 items, featuring local accommodations, artists creations and activities," said Brown. "It is open April 3 at noon until April 11 at 9 pm."
At the end of the auction items not purchased will be moved to the live auction on Saturday, April 13, at Texada Island Community Hall in Gillies Bay, beginning at 11 am.
Brown said all is going well and they should have a land announcement by the end of May or start of June.

"All of this fundraising is in support of the purchase and start of basic infrastructure needed for our community's seniors housing project," said Brown.
