Powell River Fire Rescue responded to a report of an explosion at a Tweedsmuir Avenue residence, prompted by a call from North Island fire dispatch, at 3:37 pm on January 22.
“Upon arrival, our firefighters encountered two senior residents in shock, one with minor injuries,” stated Powell River Fire Rescue deputy chief Rocky Swanson in a media release. “The home sustained significant damage on both floors. Preliminary findings rule out natural gas as the cause, pointing to an unrelated source.
“Detailed information remains confidential during the ongoing investigation. Importantly, there's no additional threat to nearby homes, and foul play is not suspected.”
The investigation, requiring a structural engineer's assessment, will prolong the duration before fire department investigators can safely re-enter the home, stated Swanson.
“Powell River Fire Rescue expresses gratitude to residents, RCMP, emergency health services and utility companies,” stated Swanson. “Chief officers commend both career and auxiliary firefighters for their calm and methodical response to the situation.”
