Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has sent residents in coastal areas, including the qathet region, a warning about elevated ocean water levels accompanied by significant wind and waves, likely exceeding the highest astronomical tide, beginning Wednesday, November 20.

Elevated water levels

The warning stated that coastal sections of Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, Southern Gulf Islands and Metro Vancouver, and southern sections of Howe Sound near Bowen Island will be affected on Wednesday near high tide at noon.

Possible flooding

"Minor coastal flooding is expected due to a storm surge and high tide with minor flooding near coastal areas due to waves crashing on shore," the ECCC alert indicated.

Weatherhood is forecasting an 80 per cent chance of rain tomorrow morning and winds up to 26 kilometres an hour, with a high temperature of seven degrees Celsius.

Storm surge and high tide

The ECCC alert for sḵelhp (Saltery Bay) to Powell River also warned that, "powerful waves can roll logs and heavy debris along beaches. A storm surge from gale to storm force southeast winds combined with seasonably high tide will produce elevated water levels for areas near the water across the south coast."
