On this day:
In 1976, Viking 1, the first space probe to successfully land on Mars, took the famous “Face of Mars” photo of the red planet’s Cydonia region.

In 1978, Louise Joy Brown, the first person to be conceived using in-vitro fertilization technology, was born in England.

In 1994, a declaration signed by Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin and Jordan’s King Hussein ended a 46-year-old state of war between the countries.

In 1999, cyclist Lance Armstrong won his first of seven consecutive Tour de France titles. He was later disqualified for using performance enhancing drugs.
