On this day:
In 1941, Canada's Avro Lancaster military plane made its first flight.

In 1969, the first trial flight of the Concorde supersonic jetliner took place in Bristol, England. The aircraft was retired from service by British Airways and Air France in 2003.

In 1979, Boston Bruins retired the number 4 in honour of former player and hockey hall of famer Bobby Orr.

In 1984, rock band Van Halen released 1984, its most commercially successful album.

In 1991, Major League Baseball officially banned former Cincinnati Reds’ player and manager Pete "Charlie Hustle" Rose from being elected to its hall of fame for betting on baseball. Rose, who also played for Montreal Expos and Philadelphia Phillies, is the league’s career hits leader, with 4,256.
