TAKING ACTION: Powell River Fire Rescue members attended the scene of a gas line break on Highway 101 south of town between Whitby Avenue and the Marland Motel. Traffic was shut down on the highway for more than an hour while repairs were made, but now the highway is open.

As of 3:45 pm on June 13, traffic is now flowing along Highway 101.

A gas line break adjacent to Highway 101 shut down traffic for more than an hour during the afternoon. Powell River Fire Rescue deputy chief Rocky Swanson said the road had been closed between Whitby Avenue and the Marland Motel while repairs were made.

“We have traffic turning around from the Beach Gardens, north, and Whitby, south,” said Swanson, after the road closure. “The highway at this spot is closed. It’s a pretty substantial break as far as we can tell.”

People needing to get to the southern portions of the region were encouraged to drive though Paradise Valley, said Swanson after the road closure.

“They are not going to get through here,” he added.
