SPRING WEATHER: Today, Thursday, March 20, marks the first official day of the spring season. The daytime temperature this afternoon will be eight degrees Celsius with a chance of showers. The photo above was taken at the Westview sea walk.

First day of spring temperatures in the qathet region are slightly cooler than the average for this time of year, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Weatherhood is forecasting the daytime temperature today, Thursday, March 20, to hit eight degrees at 1 pm, dipping to five degrees overnight. It is predicted to be a wet weekend, with a 67 per cent chance of rain on Friday, March 21, and 85 to 99 per cent chance of rain Saturday and Sunday.

The month of March is a good time to plant potatoes, strawberries, asparagus crowns, rhubarb and onion sets, according to Sow True Seed.

April is generally considered a safe time to plant tender seedlings outdoors. But, as most folks have experienced on BC's west coast, the last frost date can be unpredictable, so it’s best to check the weather forecast. 

Right now would be a good time to test soil; understanding the health of gardening soil will help determine the most economical and efficient way to improve its quality and health, according to Sow True Seed.
