Powell River Fire Rescue was at the entrance to Sunset Park in Wildwood on July 18, investigating a report of smoke in the Scout Mountain area.

Powell River Fire Rescue responded to a report of smoke on Scout Mountain in Powell River at around noon on Sunday, July 18.

A pair of helicopters circled the area over Wildwood, Townsite and Westview, one with a bucket, on standby while crews investigated.

No fire was found in the area, according to Donna MacPherson, fire information officer at Coastal Fire Centre, and the original sighting could have been something other than smoke.

“There are lots of things that can cause that; it can be industrial smoke, it can be people travelling on a dusty road that can throw dust up,” MacPherson told the Peak. “But we still want all the reports because we are responding really aggressively. It could have been something else but there is no smoke there now that we can see. We stood everybody down.”

MacPherson said the fire centre is still encouraging anyone to call 1.800.663.5555, or *5555 on mobile phones, if they see smoke, so the source can be investigated.

“We’re getting to them as fast as we can,” she added.
