Estate-sale theft victim speaks out

Powell River RCMP is investigating a theft at an estate sale on Brew Bay Road.

Powell River RCMP is investigating a theft at an estate sale on Brew Bay Road.

At approximately 3 pm on Saturday, October 3, a report was made by former Powell River resident Adrian Tam who was in town to hold the sale to help pay for his father’s funeral expenses.

“If somebody knows who took the money, call the police and let them know, because I would love to have them caught,“ said Tam.

According to RCMP constable Tim Kenning, theft at an estate or garage sale is a “unique occurrence” in Powell River.

“This is definitely not the norm,” said Kenning. “You put a lot of trust on people to let them in to your home.”

Items stolen include between $2,500 to $3,000 in Canadian currency, as well as a number of cheques.

Objects stolen were taken from an upstairs room of the house where the sale was held, said Kenning. Individuals holding estate or garage sales may not want to allow people into their homes, he said.

“You can bring items for sale outside the home or use the garage, yard or driveway, as opposed to letting people look through a house,” said Kenning.

According to Tam, it was impossible to put items outside because there were too many for him to organize in the time available.

“There were about 100 people coming and going from six outbuildings where my father had stored lumber, tools and all sorts of things,” said Tam.

According to Kenning, because the sale was well attended, there could have been many witnesses.

“If anyone has information about this theft they can call us here, or call Crime Stoppers,” said Kenning.
