Fire crews have made good progress on a wildfire that began burning on Nelson Island on Tuesday, May 28.

The fire started near Annis Bay, on the hillside, visible from the Earls Cove ferry landing.

According to Coastal Fire Centre information officer Marg Drysdale, as of Wednesday, May 29, at 2:30 pm, the fire is estimated to be about 0.6 hectare in size.

“Crews continue to work on it and it is listed as under control,” said Drysdale. “They have made very good progress on it.”

She said the fire is close to just being patrolled, which is where crews monitor the site periodically before declaring the fire out.

Aircraft were bucketing water on the fire site on Tuesday and were able to reduce the flames to “low smoking ground.”

It’s quickly becoming managed,” said Drysdale.

There is one aircraft assigned to the fire but it is largely being used to transport the crews. Drysdale said as of Wednesday afternoon, there were five wildfire service staff on the fire, assisted by forestry crews.

The fire is under investigation but has been listed as a human-caused fire.
