Conservatives announce candidate

As candidates gear up for the federal election this year, Laura Smith will be among the running.

In a press release from its local association, the Conservative Party of Canada has announced Smith as its candidate in the newly formed North Island–Powell River riding.

“I am proud to be running as a Conservative candidate because Stephen Harper is the strong, serious leader we need in our Prime Minister, and the only leader with a track record of strong economic leadership in uncertain times,” said Smith in the release. “Conservatives have consistently stood up for families, seniors and the middle class, while supporting the jobs and economic growth that keep our communities strong.”

Smith is no stranger to federal politics. Since 2008 she has been the advisor for John Duncan, MP for Vancouver Island North. Duncan announced last May he will be seeking nomination in a different Vancouver Island riding, leaving the candidacy in the new riding open for Smith.

Smith refers to her experience working with Duncan as having “been invaluable to understanding the incredible diversity of issues in the riding of North Island–Powell River, as well as how to be an advocate for coastal communities in Ottawa,” according to the press release.

“I have seen good ideas arise from conversations with constituents right here in the riding, and eventually move on to be prominently displayed in the federal budget,” said Smith. “Playing a part in moving such ideas forward is one of the most rewarding things I have done in my time in Ottawa, and the experience and knowledge I have gained is something I believe can benefit the people of North Island–Powell River.”

Smith has a background of 14 years in forest stewardship, has a bachelor degree in biology and has pursued forestry studies at University of BC. She has lived in various parts of Vancouver Island and is a Search and Rescue volunteer.

“People in North Island–Powell River want healthy and prosperous communities, sustainable jobs and respect for the places where we live and play,” said Smith. “I share these values and will fight for them in Ottawa.”
