City opens board discussion

Councillors postpone bringing new director to development corporation

City of Powell River council voted to postpone an appointment of a new director to Powell River Waterfront Development Corporation.

Instead of approving a recommendation to appoint local resident Sam Alescio, councillors decided to hold off and look at the question of board structure for Powell River’s corporations.

“The recommendation to appoint Mr. Sam Alescio was not the issue at all,” said councillor Russell Brewer. “It was a question of whether we should open it up, entertain more applications to get a sense of who may like to participate and give people a chance.”

Brewer made a motion to postpone the appointment until city staff can present a report on changes to the board members and terms of reference for city-owned corporations.

“The councillor is putting a good thought forward that we should make this an inclusive discussion about how many directors, rather than a one-off,” said Mac Fraser, city chief administrative officer. “It’s wise to defer.”

Powell River Waterfront Development Corporation, one half of the PRSC Limited Partnership, has only two directors, though that has not been an issue for the corporation to operate, said Brewer.

“We could have five, or I suspect more if we wanted,” said Brewer. “It would be nice to have more.”
