City of Powell River will be following the lead of the federal and provincial governments in observing a national day of mourning to mark the death of Queen Elizabeth.

City of Powell River will close all facilities, including city hall and Powell River Recreation Complex, on September 19, in remembrance of Queen Elizabeth II.

According to a media release, the city is following the lead of the federal and provincial governments in observing a national day of mourning to mark the death of the Queen, which coincides with Her Majesty’s state funeral in London, and the end of the official period of mourning in Canada.

The release stated that Queen Elizabeth visited Powell River on one occasion during her 70-year reign. On May 9, 1971, Her Majesty and Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who predeceased her in 2021, plus Princess Anne, were in the city as part of the royal tour that marked the centenary of the province’s entry into confederation.
