SEEKING FUNDS: City of Powell River Council will receive a recommendation for funding eight organizations, for a total of $25,000, through the city’s grants-in-aid program.

City of Powell River Council will consider issuing eight grants-in-aid, totalling $25,000, for 2023.

At the April 27 finance committee meeting, chief financial officer Mallory Denniston said the program has a $25,000 budget and the application deadline was March 31. She said it is for nonprofit organizations seeking funding for eligible programs.

“This year, we received total requests of almost $52,000 for grants-in-aid, so it’s oversubscribed by about double,” said Denniston. “The next step after receiving the applications is to assess them against the criteria. Eight of the 10 applicants were not excluded from the city council policy.

“These eight applicants do reasonably meet council’s policy criteria and I recommend that these applicants receive the grant of 70.4 per cent of what they have requested because that brings us down to a total of $25,000. My recommendation is equally applying a percentage across all applicants.”

Denniston said two applicants were excluded regarding proposing funds be spent for works that would fall under a different level of government. These include Club Bon Accueil’s application to subsidize the preschool, valued at $13,686, and Council of Canadians’ $2,500 request for legal fees for a mill environmental investigation.

Denniston’s recommendations for city council are that Townsite Ratepayers Association receive $563 for the Townsite street festival.

qathet Community Justice’s recommendation is for $1,408 for office supplies and a chair.

Townsite Heritage Society’s recommendation is for $1,408 for triangle garden maintenance.

Senior Citizens Association of BC’s recommendation is for $1,690 for the national seniors day event.

Everybody Deserves a Smile’s recommendation is for $1,761 for kindness bags.

qathet Pride Society’s recommendation is for $4,085 for 2023 Pride Week.

United Way’s recommendation is for $7,042 for Danielle’s Helping Hand.

Miklat Recovery Society’s recommendation is for $7,042 for affordable spots for the unemployed.

The finance committee voted to send the grants-in-aid to city council for approval.
