Provincial funding for libraries has stagnant for more than a decade, says city councillor

At the City of Powell River council meeting on June 2, approval was given to a proposed Union of British Columbia Municipalities resolution for restoring provincial support for public libraries.

Councillor Rob Southcott said the provincial funding for libraries across BC has stagnated for more than 10 years.

“The services provided to the community from the library are expanding greatly,” said Southcott. “There are amazing literacy programs that involve cooperation between our school board and our library. The library is doing all sorts of things.”

One example is the Read to Dogs program, said Southcott. Some children don’t like to learn how to read and they are self-conscious, he added.

“When you read to a dog, it just takes all of that away,” said Southcott. “That is the kind of amazing thing our library is doing.”
