In light of the recommendations made by the provincial health officer, the City of Powell River has decided to cancel all events in its facilities that are expected to have more than 250 people through to the end of April.
The Powell River Recreation Complex remains open and regular programming will still be running at this point, but that may change subject to advice from health authorities.
Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has recommended cancelling gatherings of more than 250 people, including indoor and outdoor sporting events, conferences, meetings, religious gatherings or other similar events. This threshold has been selected as it is much easier to maintain important social distancing to prevent transmission of COVID-19.
According to a media release, the City of Powell River is monitoring the COVID-19 situation and advisory information provided by the relevant health authorities and government agencies. The city will continue to respond to and distribute information to residents on behalf of the BC Centres for Disease Control and the Ministry of Health. Currently, the Public Health Agency of Canada has assessed the public health risk as low for Canada, the release stated.
