PROVIDES UPDATE: City of Powell River Council has approved increases to lease rates for land and improvements owned by the city, such as Powell River Public Library.

City of Powell River Council had adopted a new bylaw that sets lease rates for land and improvements owned by the city.

At the January 18 city council meeting, councillor Trina Isakson said the bylaw had been to city council four times because councillors wanted to make sure there was lots of opportunity for leaseholders and the public to be able to chime in on the lease rate updates.

“They have updated a number of things to make them more fair or more consistent, or to fix oversights of previous lease agreements,” said Isakson. “This is the final step. It has been read a first, second and third time at previous council meetings and now we are voting on adopting.”

Councillor Cindy Elliott asked if there had been any input from the public after the bylaw had been given readings at city council previously, or was it shopped around and the city didn’t get any feedback.

Manager of city property, partnerships and public relations Callie Matthews said there had been no feedback other than from Powell River Public Library, asking about the impact increases might have on the library’s budget.

“That’s the only feedback that we’ve received,” said Matthews.

The bylaw passed unanimously.
