City of Powell River has announced the commencement of the Maple and Sycamore Safe Streets project. Construction is set to begin on Wednesday, August 21, and is anticipated to be completed by Monday, September 30, subject to weather conditions.

This project aims to create a safer environment for everyone by taking significant steps to enhance pedestrian and cycling safety within the Townsite area, according to a media release from the city. Traffic calming measures such as curb extensions, painted sidewalks and a 30-kilometre per hour zone along the corridor are intended to accomplish those objectives.

To minimize disruptions to school routines at Henderson Elementary and Brooks Secondary schools, construction will commence at the Brooks end of Maple Avenue. The contractor, Leighton Contracting, has committed to implementing traffic management plans for each intersection along the project route and will be implementing stringent measures to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. Traffic control personnel will be present as required throughout the construction period to ensure the safety of all road users, according to the release.

Construction activities will encompass excavation, concrete pouring, asphalt paving, pavement marking and installation of new signage. Hours of work will be from 7 am to 7 pm, Monday through Friday.

The project is funded by a $357,000 provincial grant from the BC Active Transportation Infrastructure Grants program, a $37,000 grant from ICBC and a $248,113 grant from the Powell River Community Forest Reserve.
