Today at GLOBE Forum 2024, Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) announced more than $900,000 in funding through its Green Municipal Fund alongside the federal government to advance transit access and enhance sustainability at public facilities in Powell River, Metro Vancouver, Nanaimo, Delta, Port Moody and Kelowna.
Via media release on Thursday, February 15, Julie Dabrusin, parliamentary secretary to the minister of environment and climate change and to the minister of energy and natural resources, on behalf of Jonathan Wilkinson, minister of energy and natural resources, and FCM president Scott Pearce, made the announcement about a federal investment of $917,050 through the Green Municipal Fund to support local projects that will advance transit access and enhance sustainability at public facilities in the six BC communities across.
City of Powell River receives $68,400 to conduct a study on emission reduction strategies for its most emitting facilities, including its city hall, recreation complex, public works facilities, an entertainment centre, the RCMP building and public library, according to the release. These buildings collectively emit over 600 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (tCO2e) of GHG emissions annually, which constitutes more than 60 per cent of the city's corporate building emissions, the release stated.
“Today’s investment supports local projects that will make municipal buildings more efficiency and resilient," stated minister of energy and natural resources Jonathan Wilkinson. "Congratulations to our municipal partners on advancing these innovative projects across British Columbia.”
The Green Municipal Fund, administered by FCM, is funded through a $1.65 billion federal endowment by the Government of Canada. The GMF helps local governments switch to sustainable practices faster. Its unique mix of funding, resources and training gives municipalities the tools they need to build resiliency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
