STRANDED SAILBOAT: A sailing vessel came free of its mooring and ran aground on the shore near the Westview viewpoint on August 7. Canadian Coast Guard is trying to find the owner of the vessel.

A beached sailing vessel that washed up on the shore near the Westview viewpoint is under investigation by the Canadian Coast Guard.

According to Michelle Imbeau, Canadian Coast Guard communications advisor, on the evening of August 7, the coast guard received a report of a sailing vessel that came free of its mooring and was aground on the beach near Powell River.

“The coast guard determined that no one was on board and that the vessel was stable and not polluting,” said Imbeau on August 10.

On the afternoon of August 8, at low tide, the vessel was assessed by the coast guard’s Powell River station crew, according to Imbeau. She said it was determined that the vessel was a low risk to pollute and the two jerry cans that were on the vessel were removed.

“The owner is currently unknown,” said Imbeau.

On the evening of August 8, at high tide, the sailing vessel was removed from the beach by a concerned citizen and re-anchored off of the beach, according to Imbeau.

“The vessel has been transferred to coast guard’s vessels of concern program, where a hazard assessment will be conducted,” said Imbeau, “and continued efforts will be made to identify and communicate with the vessel owner.”
